LTO tape under the microscope

Not all LTO tapes are manufactured in the same way LTO1 to LTO5 tapes were produced using traditional Metal Particle (MP) tape coating technology. However, Fujifilm developed advanced Barium Ferrite (BaFe) technology for their 6th generation LTO and enterprise tape formats. So what's the difference between traditional Metal Particle and Barium Ferrite? The evidence can be found under the microscope....... The right hand image is a close-up of Metal Particle LTO Ultrium tape: large particles, lying on their side, with little uniformity. The left hand image is Barium Ferrite LTO Ultrium tape: ultra-small particles, packed extremely densely due to particle...

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF TAPE TECHNOLOGY FOR DATA STORAGE AND MANAGEMENT? There is news in the field of tape storage: two new products will be launched in 2018 which will change tape technology’s offer in the field of data storage. Planned for summer of next year is what we can call the IBM revolution; the new 3592JE drive with a 20TB capacity data tape and with 500MB/s transfer rate. Prior to this, the start of the year will see the launch of the new LTO8 with a capacity of 12TB and close to 350MB/s transfer rate (information to be...

The LTO Program, a consortium to develop and make available LTO as an open format, which was formed by technology provider companies Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Quantum, continues work on the roadmap of the LTO Ultrium tape format. “We’re talking about the continuing progress of the LTO format, having released version LTO-7, and we are now working on LTO-8,” said an LTO Program representative. “The main focus is on increasing the capacity of LTO-8 to 12TB. "The volumes and retention periods of data are growing faster than advancements in hard disk technology. This increases the demand for cost-effective, secure...
