LTO-8 development continues at a pace

The LTO Program, a consortium to develop and make available LTO as an open format, which was formed by technology provider companies Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Quantum, continues work on the roadmap of the LTO Ultrium tape format.

“We’re talking about the continuing progress of the LTO format, having released version LTO-7, and we are now working on LTO-8,” said an LTO Program representative. “The main focus is on increasing the capacity of LTO-8 to 12TB.

"The volumes and retention periods of data are growing faster than advancements in hard disk technology. This increases the demand for cost-effective, secure archive storage. LTO-7 and LTO-8 Ultrium tape can address this need in the marketplace, and the future of tape looks assured as the LTO Ultrium roadmap unfolds."
